Our very own Oral Surgeon is on hand to carry out the more complex surgical procedures here at Londent.

Wisdom teeth extractions

Most of us have experienced some form of discomfort from our wisdom teeth. For some, this can be a lot more severe and lead to frequent infections. In these cases, it’s often a good idea to remove the wisdom teeth to prevent recurrent infections and allow the effective management of the rest of your mouth, especially the teeth adjacent to the problematic ones.

Removal of wisdom teeth can, however, be complicated to remove and sometimes comes with risks that require specialist skills to minimise and manage.

FAQs

Why might I need my wisdom teeth removed?

  • If you have had recurrent infections that cause pain, lead to difficulty opening your mouth, cause  facial swelling and require antibiotics to resolve
  • If the wisdom teeth are heavily decayed and cannot be stabilized with a filling
  • If the position of the wisdom tooth is compromising your ability to keep the teeth adjacent clean, or it’s causing decay and damage to the adjacent tooth.

If they’re so problematic, shouldn’t I just get them removed anyway?

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Due to the risks involved, it can be a better option to incorporate ways to reduce this risk into your dental regime. We will teach you how to keep the area clean and utilise different tools and methods to prevent infections from occurring.

What are the risks?

The roots of a lower wisdom tooth can be closely associated with a nerve in your jaw (the inferior dental nerve, or ID nerve) that supplies sensation to your lip, teeth, skin overlying your chin and tongue on the side of the face where the tooth sits. If this is the case and we remove the tooth, it can lead to temporary or permanent altered sensation or altered taste sensation in these areas.

What if I keep getting infections but the roots are too close to the nerve?

In this case, we can consider performing what is called a ‘Coronectomy’. Our oral surgeon will perform a minor  procedure to cut off the top of the tooth and leave the roots in place, buried in the bone. This will heal over  sealing the roots in the bone. As it will no longer be exposed to the bacteria in the mouth, the infections will

stop occurring and the nerve will have been left untouched. There is, however, a chance that the roots will  need to be removed in the future.

What else might I need to see an Oral Surgeon for?

  • Complex or difficult extractions such as weak, root-filled teeth
  • Bone grafting
  • Temporomandibular joint disorders
  • Minor jaw surgery

This is an excellent dental practice that I've been recommending to my coworkers for awhile. The staff is friendly and professional. The sisters who run the practice are thorough not just with the examinations and cleaning, but also make sure to give me personalized and practical advice for at-home care. They make it as pleasant as a trip to the...

I enquired about a chipped tooth issue and was seen within 24 hours of making the enquiry. Treatment options were clearly explained and discussed, in what is a very professional setting just off Shad Thames. I appreciate the fact that costs were also discussed before making the appointment, which meant that there were no surprises on the day. Overall, very...

After years of not going to the dentist, I was dreading my visit. Very welcoming practice. Dr Li kept me informed of my treatment plan and explained clearly what was needed and why. Very reassuring and professional. I've never had to wait for my appointments as well, which is very appreciated on a tight schedule.

I visited Londent and had an initial consultation with Dr Panayiotis Kaimakamis (Periodontist). What an absolute dream he was from start to finish. I was quite anxious regarding some rather complex periodontal surgery I needed ASAP and his customer care, subject matter expertise and surgical skills in my humble opinion remain unmatched. I recommend both this clinic and Dr Pano...
