Periodontal diseases are complex diseases initiated by bacteria accumulating around teeth. This accumulation of bacteria (also known as plaque) leads to inflammation of the gum tissues i.e. to gingivitis. If this dental plaque is not removed, it may initiate an immune and inflammatory response which, in susceptible subjects, can lead to periodontitis.
Although most individuals suffer gum inflammation from time to time, around 10% of the population appear to be affected by the more severe forms of the disease which cause significant loss of supporting bone. This group is at the greatest risk of losing teeth through periodontal disease.
Family history, smoking and diabetes are all important risk factors. Stress as well as certain medication may also make an individual more susceptible.
A full Periodontal Consultation will first be carried out by our Specialist Periodontist Dr Pano Kaimakamis. This will involve extensive investigation of the current health of your gums as well as x-rays to determine the extent of bone loss. Once we understand the reasons for and extent of periodontal disease, treatment options and recommendations will be discussed with you, and follow up appointments arranged.
